[Photographer's] Labor & Delivery Amnesia

August 26, 2014  •  2 Comments

Every time I am on call to photograph a birth, I wonder if it's worth it.

"Is it really worth the stress on my family?"

"Is it really worth the stress on my friends who are also on call to babysit my kids at the last minute?"

"Is it really worth waking up in the middle of the night? Making last minute schedule changes? Missing out on previous plans?"

But then I get there. And I watch the miracle of birth through my lens. And I experience the joy of knowing I'm capturing some extremely important family moments for my client. I tear up every time I see a child take their first breath. There are no words for the look on a mother's face when she first sees her precious baby. Same goes for the father. Or the older siblings!

When I am editing a birth photography session, I can't stop smiling. EVER. It's the most magical thing. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

I kind of want to compare it to labor & delivery amnesia... you know, where a mom says "I'm never doing this again" and then she holds her baby and kind of forgets all about the pain. {Side note: I am in NO WAY serious that the stress of being a birth photographer is even remotely similar to the pain of childbirth! This is a VERY weak analogy! But you get my point.}

Birth photography is absolutely hands down my favorite thing to photograph. So the answer to all those "is this really worth it" questions is YES. 100% yes. It is a privilege and a joy to be a birth photographer.

So who's next? If you're expecting or if you know friends in the KMC area who are, share my info and contact me about a shoot.

I would love to photograph your birth.

Oh don't worry about that! This has been more of a "movie and pajamas most days" kind of vacation. Delightful!

Awesome! I'm so thankful it was worth it. I am so thankful you were here. I was thinking about the fact that you couldn't go on vacation throughout your girls' summer vacation because you were waiting for me and Jane. Thank you, thank you!
